CONTRAINDICATIONS TO LENS WEAR OCULAR REASONS Corneal neovascularization If a patient has neovascularization from a previous condition or contact lens wear, fitting the patient with contact lenses enhances the chances of reactiviting the neovascularization even if the corneal vessels are empty. If the patient is fitted, RGP lenses may be preferred (unless the original neovascularization was due to rigid lenses) since they supply more oxygen to the cornea and do not deprive the peripheral cornea of oxygen. If hydrogel lenses are fitted, use a thin and medium to high water content lens to increase oxygen transmissibility. The patient should not be wearing the lenses on an extended wear schedule.
